UN renders assistance in coping with conflict consequences in Batken's border villages

Bishkek, May 11, 2021. / Kabar / . The Kyrgyz capital city of Bishkek hosted on Monday a meeting between First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Nuran Niyazaliyev and UN Resident Coordinator in Kyrgyzstan Ozonia Ojielo. During the meeting, the sides discussed joint steps to restore villages of Batken Oblast that suffered during the conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry reported. Ozonia Ojielo said the sides have activated the Emergency Response Team, which is a platform for coordinating joint efforts of the Kyrgyz Government and UN agencies in case of emergencies. As part of this effort, a UN humanitarian team has been formed that visited Batken Oblast to assess the current needs of affected residents. Nuran Niyazaliyev thanked the UN resident coordinator for the rapid response and measures taken to overcome the consequences of the armed conflict. He noted Batken Oblast needs not only emergency but also long-term assistance in socio-economic development. In this regard, the first deputy minister expressed hope for the UN support in the economic recovery of Batken Oblast, as well as work on attracting assistance from international donors.
