UNGA adopts Kyrgyzstan’s initiative on transboundary co-op in field of biodiversity conservation

Bishkek, April 19, 2021 . / Kabar /. On April 16, 2021 during a plenary meeting of the 75th session, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a new resolution initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic entitled "Nature knows no borders: Transbounday cooperation is a key factor in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity”. The Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry’s press service reported that during the adoption of the resolution, along with the general support of all states, 60 UN member states co-sponsored the resolution of Kyrgyzstan. The main goal of the resolution is to strengthen transboundary cooperation on biodiversity conservation through joint actions to ensure a clean, safe and stable environment for future generations, while managing natural resources based on the principles of sustainable development and implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The project received positive recommendations and support from a number of global environmental organizations, such as the UN Convention on Biodiversity, the Convention on Migratory Species, the Ramsar Convention and the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU). During the presentation of the resolution at the UN General Assembly, Permanent Representative Mirgul Moldoisaeva noted Kyrgyzstan fully supports the 2030 Agenda and most of the key international initiatives in the field of ecology. She also stressed that the adoption of the resolution proposed by Kyrgyzstan would recognize the importance of the environmental challenges facing the world community and the need to develop international cooperation to find joint solutions for the protection, restoration and use of biodiversity for sustainable development. The resolution initiated by Kyrgyzstan is one of the few specialized UN documents covering transboundary cooperation between UN member states in the environmental sphere, which is now becoming increasingly relevant at the international, regional and bilateral levels.
