Afghan VP: Iran plays important in role reconstruction of Afghanistan
An Afghan vice president praised here Wednesday Iran’s role in reconstruction process of his country.
The Second Afghan Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili said in a meeting with Deputy Head of Iran’s Anti-Narcotic Drug Trafficking Campaign Headquarters Taha Taheri that Iran is today playing an effective role in reconstruction of Afghanistan, as it has done in the past.
According to IRNA correspondent in Kabul, praising Iran’s generous contributions and great assistance in the reconstruction process of Afghanistan during the course of the past seven years, Khalili added, “Iran’s other invaluable service to the Afghan nation is having hosted millions of Afghan immigrants benevolently during the course of the Afghan nation’s Jihadi war against former Soviet occupiers of our country.”
He welcomed the idea of the two countries’ cooperation in campaign against narcotic drugs trafficking, emphasizing, “We meanwhile favor comprehensive bilateral cooperation.”
Taheri, too, in his meeting with the second Afghan vice president said that keeping in mind the Afghan Anti-narcotic Drug Trafficking Ministry’s interest in launching an effective campaign against narcotic drug traffickers, Iran is ready to assist Afghanistan in construction of broader police stations, training of police forces, decreasing the level of social vices and delinquencies, and the rehabilitation of addicts.
He meanwhile stressed the necessity for information exchange, cooperation and launching of joint operations in campaign against narcotic drugs trafficking, and identification of the sources of income of the two countries’ drug lords.
Taheri arrived in Afghanistan on Monday atop a delegation upon an invitation extended by the Afghan Anti-Narcotic Trafficking Minister Khodaidad.
He had a meeting with deputy Afghan interior and foreign ministers and the representative of the UN secretary general in Afghanistan, Kai Ideh on Tuesday.
The Iranian delegation meanwhile visited Afghanistan’s Military College and Narcotic Drug Campaign Police Headquarters.
Afghanistan is the top produces of narcotic drugs among the world’s top 20 producers of such drugs, producing 92% of the world narcotic market’s heroin and 90% of its opium.
According to the 2008 UN report, Afghanistan’s 157,000 hectares of poppy flower farms yield 700 tons of opium annually.
The value of Afghanistan’s annual production of opium is around four billion US dollars, which is 1.1 billion dollars more than the current annual budget of that country.
Narcotic drugs trafficking is closely entangled with terrorism in Afghanistan, so that an annual 500 million dollars of the trade’s revenues go directly to the insurgents’ and the warlords’ accounts, which is eventually spent on buying war weaponry, training and attracting bandits to fight against the government and the foreign forces in Afghanistan.
