Lab results show no influenza A (H1N1) case in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) – Public health ministry officials said on Wednesday that laboratory results conducted on three patients confirm all are clear of the influenza A (H1N1) virus. Two Thai men and a 50-year-old German woman all tested negative.

After attending a video conference with nationwide centers for disease control and prevention, Dr. Suphan Srithamma, a spokesman of the public health ministry said the three cases under surveillance included the German woman lady at a Bangkok hospital and two other cases - one in Nakhon Sawan and one in Ubon Ratchthani. All three were all discharged from hospital.

Pamphlets about influenza A(H1N1) and health instructions have been handed out at all international airports in the country while medicated hand gel, hygiene masks and the antiviral drug Oseltamivir have been sent to Thai embassies in 21 countries where influenza A (H1N1) cases have been reported, he said.

He said as an added precaution, the ministry would also introduce measures to screen foreigners travelling to Thailand by train from Malaysia and Singapore.

According to the World Health Organization, there have been 1,490 influenza A (H1N1) cases confirmed with 31 deaths in the period between April 24 to May 6.

In Thailand, the Bureau of Epidemiology has registered 13 suspected cases from April 28 to May 5 but all tested negative for the new virus and all had normal seasonal flu, according to their lab test results.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yong Phuworawan, head of Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology, Chulalongkorn University told a press conference on Wednesday that the center has received influenza A (H1N1) virus genetic material (RNA) and his researchers will use the samples to find ways of improving diagnosis of influenza H1N1.
