Euthanasia campaigner held at UK airport

Australian euthanasia advocate Philip Nitschke has been detained by British
authorities at Heathrow airport, his lawyer says.
Dr Nitschke flew into London on Saturday for a series of public meetings and
workshops on voluntary euthanasia to be held across the UK next week.
The founder of the Exit International organisation said he and his wife Fiona were
waiting for legal advice before being interviewed by customs officials.
"Presumably on the basis of that they will make a decision on whether we will be
deported or allowed into the country," Dr Nitschke said from a payphone in a holding
room at Heathrow.
Their Brisbane lawyer Terry O'Gorman has been in touch with British authorities.
"They are supposedly wanting to interview him as to whether he is (in) Britain to
commit a criminal offence," he said.
"For that reason and because of the cost and inconvenience and lost opportunity
consequences if he's turned around I'm trying to organise a lawyer to get there to
advise him.
"I've made a number of phone calls to the immigration officers ... trying to get
them to agree.
"I'm having difficulties at the first barrier with that problem and I'm currently
trying to resolve that."
He said he had been advised it was likely to be several hours before they were
interviewed.
Dr Nitschke's wife Fiona said their luggage had been searched and their phones and
passports taken.
