Iran, Japan review new US administration’s approach

Visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone conferred on Saturday with Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on the new US administration’s approach to global developments.

The two ministers expressed their views at a joint press conference in Tehran on Saturday.

Referring to the approaches adopted by the new US administration, Mottaki said there is a common view and outlook between the two countries.

“If change of policy claimed by the US president is to be materialized, it would provide a new outlook in global developments,” he said.

On Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, he said the country’s nuclear activities are totally peaceful within NPT’s governing rules and regulations and it is quite natural that all countries such as Japan which benefit from such a technology should enjoy identical rights and privileges.

Iran like Japan tries to win confidence of the international community to this end, he said, adding that while the Japanese were trying to win support and confidence of global community, they were not asked to halt or freeze their nuclear activities, he said.

On the issue of Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi who is in jail on charges of espionage, Mottaki said the court verdict has been appealed.

Rules and regulations in Iran equally apply to all individuals who violate the law, he said.

On current developments in Afghanistan, he said Iran and Japan share identical stands and views on the current crises in Afghanistan, the region and spread of extremism.

During talks with Japanese foreign minister, the two sides underlined the need to make more efforts to help resolve existing crisis in Afghanistan, he said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan in the field of humanitarian issues have agreed to launch a joint campaign against drug trafficking, border controls, status of war refugees and implementation of joint reconstruction projects in Afghanistan, he said.

It is for 80 years that the two countries have established diplomatic relations, he said adding that “We are to broaden all-out political, economic and cultural cooperation at mutual, regional and international levels.”

Calling for continued talks and consultations between the two sides' officials on political issues, he said current level of trade exchange between Iran and Japan stands at dlrs 20 billion and Iran is proud of being a major supplier of energy to Japan.

Japanese foreign minister, for his part, said Iran has taken good stride to promote dialogue with the group 5+1.

Calling for continued cooperation between Iran and the International community on nuclear issues, he said Iran has conducted positive and constructive measures to prepare grounds for dialogue with group 5+1.

Iran should pursue the US foreign policy on holding talks with Tehran and should not lose the opportunity but to take positive steps to this end, he said.

Japan respects Iran and has fully cooperated with the country to attain development, he said adding that “We believe that expansion of relations requires improvement of atmosphere in international community.”

“We urge Iran to seriously deal with its nuclear issue,” he said.

Japan believes that Iran’s peaceful nuclear issue should be resolved through resolutions, he said.

Iran has now turned into a regional power, he said adding that the country plays a vital role in restoring stability in the region, he underlined.

Iran and Japan have had a very good cooperation in anti-drug fight in Afghanistan as well as resettlement of their war refugees, he said.

Iran plays a very leading role in restoring stability in Afghanistan, he said adding that “We hope to witness improvement of ties and relations between Tehran and international community to this end.”

On Roxana Sabrei, he said “We believe that her case is handled at Iran’s judiciary system but since her mother is a Japanese national, the Japanese government pursues her case.”
