Thailand installing more virus scanners at airports, border checkpoints
BANGKOK, May 2 (TNA) - Thailand will install 10 more infrared thermo scanners at airports and border checkpoints nationwide to prevent the deadly influenza A (H1N1) virus from entering the country, Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kajornprasart said on Saturday.
Accompanied by Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nop-amornbodi and senior ministry officials, the deputy prime minister told journalists after inspecting the quarantine centre at Suvarnabhumi international airport that he would update the Cabinet Tuesday with latest developments, and also seek a budget for 10 more infrared thermo scanners costing Bt1.5 million each.
The new scanners will be installed at every airport, marine and border checkpoints, he said.
Mr. Manit said that so far six scanners had already been installed at Suvarnabhumi airport with five technicians manning each scanner around-the-clock. No arriving passengers have been detected with the virus in the past five days.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he is confident that the ASEAN Health Ministers meeting in Bangkok will strengthen the region’s defense against swine flu.
He said the disease has now entered Hong Kong and South Korea and that strict measures are needed to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
“ASEAN public health ministers will meet next week and more effective measures are expected to be issued,” said Mr. Abhisit, admitting that it is rather difficult to contain the disease due to a large number of travellers visiting the country.
However, all efforts must be put in order to prevent the disease from entering the region, Mr. Abhisit said. (TNA)
