Iraq, Iran officials urge further activation of parliamentary ties

Iran and Iraq called for activation of Tehran-Baghdad joint Parliamentary Friendship Group.

The request was made by Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Kazemi Qomi and newly-elected Iraqi Parliament Speaker Iyad al-Samirrai during a meeting here Tuesday evening .

The two officials called for further expansion of bilateral parliamentary cooperation and underscored the need for exchange of delegations between the two parliaments.

The latest developments in the occupied Iraq were also reviewed in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Iranian envoy submitted the written message of Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani to al-Samirrai, congratulating him on his election as Iraq's Speaker.

Al-Samirrai was elected on Sunday by total majority after Mahmoud al- Mashhadani stepped down in December .

The Iraqi speaker then expressed his regret over martyrdom of tens of Iranian pilgrims in the recent explosions in several Iraqi cities.

He also welcomed Iran’s experiences in the area of parliamentary affairs.
