Shoulder injury a minor hiccup for Green
Former world champion Danny Green admits he was almost forced to postpone his
comeback fight after picking up a shoulder injury last week.
Green suffered the injury at training and initially feared he would have to postpone
Sunday's fight with South African Anthony van Niekerk.
But fortunately for Green the injury subsided, with the 36-year-old confident the
niggle won't affect him in the ring even if it flared again.
"It was only a small injury but it was pretty frustrating," Green said on Thursday.
"There was the potential the fight may have been called off because we weren't sure
how serious it was.
"But fortunately it's come good and it's all OK.
"I'm 100 per cent fit and ready to roll on Sunday night so I can't wait.
"I've fought with a broken nose, a broken jaw and a broken hand in the one fight so
a little shoulder injury will be sweet as a nut.
"It's probably actually been a benefit because it's made me pull back a little bit.
"I probably would have peaked a bit early because I've been so anxious to be
impressive in this fight, I'm training very hard.
"So it's been a setback but it's also been an advantage because it's helped me
freshen up and stay sharper."
Green's fight against van Niekerk will be his first in almost 16 months.
The West Australian came out of retirement in March in order to have another crack
at arch nemesis Anthony Mundine, who won the first bout between the pair in 2006.
Green's road to redemption starts against Van Niekerk, who has a record of 21 wins,
six losses and two draws.
"It's going to be a hard fight," Niekerk said.
"I'm not here to say I'm going to overrun Danny on Sunday ... (but) I don't come
here to lay down, we've come here to fight.
"We've been training for four months."
Green hoped a packed Challenge Stadium would help give him an extra edge.
"I'm the home town favourite I guess," he said.
"It's a pretty daunting prospect what this bloke's stepping in to.
"It's like a lion's den at Challenge Stadium, there's no other atmosphere like it in
the world."
