Wounded anti-Thaksin leader to leave hospital Friday
BANGKOK, April 20 (TNA) - A doctor said on Monday Sondhi Limthongkul, the key leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), was recovering from the gunshot wounds received in Friday's assassination attempt by a group of gunmen and is expected to return home this Friday.
The PAD leadership demanded that the government arrest the assailants.
Dr. Adisorn Phattaradul, director of Chulalongkorn Hospital, said Mr. Sondhi is recovering satisfactorily and is expected to return home Friday.
The condition of his close aide is also improving, Dr. Adisorn said, and he can leave hospital any time, but his more seriously injured driver will require more extensively followed-up medical care.
Mr. Sondhi's vehicle was attacked by more than five gunmen last Friday at a downtown Bangkok intersection. They were wounded when the assailants halted the car by shooting out it's tyres, and then poured fire on the vehicle from the front with semi-automatic military weapons, at least one each of an AK-47, an M-16 and an SK.
A number of staunch supporters and senior members of the PAD, including retired Royal Thai Air Force Squadron Leader Prasong Soonsiri, visited Mr. Sondhi at hospital and told journalists that the government must quickly apprehend the gunmen.
If not, they warned, the government must take responsibility.
Accompanied by his wife, retired Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang, one of the key PAD leaders said he would have to ask the rest of the PAD leaders whether the group's supporters should come out on the streets.
The PAD had earlier helped topple three governments, including that of billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup d'etat in September 2006. (TNA)
