West Coast upset Bulldogs in Perth
West Coast atoned for last week's humiliating loss to St Kilda with an impressive
33-point AFL triumph over Western Bulldogs at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.
The Eagles, put on notice by coach John Worsfold during the week, rebounded in fine
style, stifling the run of the free-wheeling Bulldogs to post the 17.14 (116) to
12.11 (83) win in front of 37,758 fans.
Bulldogs forward Jason Akermanis faces a nervous wait to see if the match review
panel penalises his second-quarter trip on Mark Nicoski.
Eagles midfielder Adam Selwood continued his fine start to the season with a
27-possession haul while Daniel Kerr, ruckman Dean Cox and the recalled Brent Staker
were also crucial through the middle.
Quinten Lynch (three goals), Adam Hunter (three), Ben McKinley (two) and Mark LeCras
(two) shared the load up forward while Darren Glass, Mark Nicoski, Mitch Brown and
David Wirrpanda led the defence from the front.
Daniel Cross (24 touches) and Akermanis never stopped working for the Bulldogs,
while Shaun Higgins (four goals) proved a constant nuisance in attack.
The Bulldogs led by five points midway through the opening term but the Eagles
finished the quarter with a flurry, booting four unanswered goals to take a handy
20-point lead into the first break.
West Coast threatened to run away with the game after extending the margin to 26
points early in the second quarter but the Bulldogs dug deep, with a great snap from
Ryan Griffen and a captain's goal from Brad Johnson keeping the visitors within
reach.
Despite the 27c heat both sides were throwing everything at the contest.
Kerr gave the crowd a showing of a different kind when he threw up blue fluid
several times on the sidelines after his heavy bump on Mitch Hahn left him the worse
for wear.
But the star Eagle returned to the fray just in time to see a running Cox dish off
to LeCras for a goal late in the quarter that gave the Eagles a 19-point buffer at
half-time.
Kerr was held to just eight touches in the first half but, just like he did against
Port Adelaide a fortnight ago, tore the game apart with a scintillating third term.
The 25-year-old notched 13 possessions for the quarter despite being on the end of
two crunching bumps from Liam Picken.
Lynch made the most of Kerr's dominance, booting two goals for the term as the
Eagles took a commanding 34-point lead into the final term.
The Bulldogs booted three unanswered goals in the final term to close the margin to
21 points but the Eagles steadied, with goals to Wirrpanda and Staker sealing the
win.
