AZERBAIJAN AND RUSSIAN PRESIDENTS MEET IN MOSCOW

Moscow, 17 April (AzerTAc). As earlier reported, on 17 April, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia met in Moscow.
During the meeting, Dmitry Medvedev noted that between two countries were established good relations. “We regularly communicate and discuss all questions interesting us. Last year`s goods turnover has increased by 40 %”, the Russian president underlined. As he said, current year will be more difficult. “Our problem is to keep what has been made. We have reached growth not only at the expense of energy carriers, but also at the expense of qualitative change of goods turnover that is especially valuable,” noted D. Medvedev.
The president of the Russian Federation suggested keeping further positive dynamics in bilateral economic relations. He noted also strengthening of contacts in humanitarian relations, underlining that it brings us closer.
President Ilham Aliyev said the positive development of mutual relations is influenced by “our personal friendly relations”.
He underlined also that global crisis has made some corrective amendments in dynamics of the development of economic relations, but expressed hope that goods turnover will reach 3 billion dollars.
President Aliyev underlined that “Russia is the friend of Azerbaijan, the neighbor, the strategic partner, and on this basis we will develop our relations”.
The heads of the states discussed also new perspective directions of interaction, in particular, in the energy sphere, connected with delivery of the Azerbaijan natural gas to world markets.
As to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Russian President said Russia would like to reach maximum progress on negotiations concerning settlement of the conflict.
“What, in my opinion, still very important, is regular character of meetings between presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia. Russia is ready to use its own mandate. We always tried to promote this process and if such contacts are continued, and other alternative does not exist, I am assured that this problem can be settled, proceeding from interests of two people, in view of the prepared offers”, president Medvedev told the journalists after negotiations with the Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev.
The Russian leader did not exclude that “there can be any new ideas”. “There are prospects and, first of all, it is necessary to base on norms of international law and the resolution which were accepted by the United Nations and OSCE,” Dmitry Medvedev emphasized.
The president of Azerbaijan expressed gratitude to Russia for attempts to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. He expressed hope that the conflict will be settled quickly enough. “Of course, absence of result cannot please us, but, nevertheless, we cannot shut eyes that there is a certain progress in the course of negotiations. This progress also supports our hope that the conflict will be settled quickly enough. Positions of the parties in certain degree have approached lately,” president of Azerbaijan told.
At his words, still there are questions on which the parties cannot come to the consent. President Aliyev noted that attempts of Baku are always based on constructive approach, on international law, on restoration of historical justice. “It is not a secret that throughout almost 20 years territory of Azerbaijan is under occupation, and this fact is recognized by all world community. We hope that the next months we can move forward the process of settlement and achieve such decision which would be equitable to interests of two countries which would provide restoration of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and restoration of norms and principles in our region”, he stressed.
Azerbaijan considers that the volume of the Azerbaijani oil on the Baku-Novorossiysk oil pipeline will be increased, President Ilham Aliyev stated. “Throughout many years the Baku-Novorossiysk oil pipeline functions, and we expect to increase in the future volume of the Azerbaijani oil to transport via this line”, Mr. Aliyev told at press conference.
At his words, cooperation in the field of electric power industry develops, and Azerbaijan also seriously relies on mutually advantageous cooperation in this sphere.
Speaking about cooperation in gas sphere, as the president of Azerbaijan noted, it is a theme “rather new” which began to be discussed recently. “But in the mentioned direction, I think, it is possible to ascertain sufficient progress. Russian “Gazprom” and the State Company of Azerbaijan carry out negotiations for the agreement under the memorandum signed recently. It confirms mutual interest”, president of Azerbaijan said.
“For Azerbaijan, cooperation in this direction is also an element of diversification of gas deliveries as today the Azerbaijani gas is transported in the western direction. We are, of course, interested in diversification of deliveries to the new markets,” Mr. Aliyev stated. He expressed hope that negotiations which are conducted between the companies will come to an end successfully.
“Cooperation in power sphere, and in particular in gas, will pass, I hope, on mutually advantageous conditions and in the spirit of good neighborhood. As we are neighbors, and between us there are no transit countries, there is effective enough transport infrastructure, there is no necessity of additional investments on building of pipelines and gas pipelines. All these initial positions are very advantageous, and it is necessary, that the companies in the spirit of good will have come to an agreement on cooperation in gas sphere between Azerbaijan and Russia,” President of Azerbaijan underlined.
