Thai cabinet extends emergency rule in restive South
BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) – Emergency rule in the country’s southernmost border provinces was extended by the Cabinet on Friday.
The extension of the Executive Decree on Government Administration in Emergency Situations in the insurgency-wracked southern border provinces for another three months, from April 20 through July 19, according to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, the premier cited public opinion surveys and the assessments of concerned agencies as the main reason to extend enforcement of the special law in an attempt to end the insurgent attacks.
He also urged security forces to look into any possible lapses as well as criticism of law enforcement in order to adjust the operations in a transparent and effective manner even though fewer complaints have been lodged recently.
First effected by executive order of then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the decree has been enforced since July 2005 and has been renewed every three months since then.
The decree gives the security forces sweeping powers of arrest and detention in the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. It remains in force for three months at a time.
Over 3,500 people have been killed in the three southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat since violence erupted in early 2004.
Meanwhile, a combined force of police, soldiers and civil government personnel raided an insurgents' temporary camp in a forest in Rangae district and seized firearms, explosive devices as well as daily necessity items.
The authorities also found a map believed to be used in planning an attack on a military camp in Tanyong Limor. It will be used as key evidence for further investigation.
Initial police investigation indicated that the insurgents were the same group which staged a car-bomb attack against police bomb squad in Narathiwat in January and several criminal cases including the brutal killing of two marines in Tanyong Limor several years ago. (TNA)
