Baghdad (NINA) - The US embassy in Baghdad announced that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Allawi to resolve differences with Kurdish and Sunni political leaders to ensure the success of his government in carrying out the basic tasks.
The US embassy in Baghdad, in a press statement, quoted a spokeswoman for the US State Department, Morgan Ortagus, as saying that "Pompeo made a phone call to the designated Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, to reaffirm the United States' permanent commitment to a strong, prosperous and sovereign Iraq."
She added: "The US Secretary of State welcomed the prime minister's pledge to hold early elections in order to support the democratic system in Iraq, and urged the new Iraqi prime minister to resolve differences with Kurdish and Sunni political leaders to ensure the success of his government in carrying out the basic tasks."
The US Secretary of State also stressed, according to the spokeswoman, the commitment of Iraq to protect US diplomats, coalition forces and their facilities.
Foreign Minister Pompeo and Prime Minister-designate Allawi also reviewed the movement of protests, especially the imperative of the next government to put an end to the killing of protesters and seek justice for the dead and wounded and to deal with their legitimate grievances, and the parties agreed on the importance of initiating reforms that would enable the government to provide a decent life and prosperity and security of the Iraqi people.
