CASPIAN NATIONS TAKE STEP CLOSER TO AGREEING CONVENTION ON CASPIAN LEGAL STATUS
Moscow, April 15 (AzerTAc). The text of the convention on the Caspian legal status has been 70-80% agreed, representative of Russia in the working group for defining Caspian legal status Alexander Golovin told a press conference on the results of consultations on the Caspian sea status.
According to him, the parties continued to agree the text of the convention and hailed the pentalateral meeting in Moscow, which rounded off with adopting a communiqué. Unagreed points include Caspian seabed division (agreement was signed only my Russia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan) and delimitation of water area.
Golovin expressed hope that forthcoming Baku consultations on Caspian security, discussion of the document proposed by the Azerbaijan party and conduct of the third summit of the Caspian nations in Baku will be fruitful.
“Caspian nations will express their opinions on setting up the economic cooperation organization after agreeing relevant issues,” Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Khalaf Khalafov told a news conference.
According to him, “when we agree all positions on any issue including that concerning the economic cooperation organization, the heads of states will make respective decisions while we are working at the level of working group and experts to agree all issues”. Khalafov noted Caspian nations carry on an active dialogue on all issues regarding the Caspian.
Iranian representative Mekhti Safari pointed out Iran`s position on dividing the Caspian into equal parts remained unchanged. Iran is conferring with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on this issue.
“Of course, each state protects its national interests. Therefore, we are going to discuss various issues and make our positions closer,” said Safari.
He praised the results of the Teheran summit, intergovernmental economic conference in Astrakhan. He praised the draft document on stability and security proposed by Azerbaijan, saying it can be signed in Baku shortly.
