Thai PM declares state of emergency in Bangkok, nearby provinces

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday declared a state of emergency in the capital and five neighbouring provinces, a day after anti-government protesters cancelled a 16-nation regional summit.

Effective immediately, the state of emergency is imposed in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom and Ayutthaya provinces because a group of people are inciting unrest.

It will be implemented by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Mr. Abhisit said.

He said the government deemed it necessary to declare the state of emergency before the situation has become “worsen.”

Under the order, gatherings of more than five people are prohibited, the press is not allowed to present news reports which could incite panic among to the public. The order also allows the public to be evacuated from areas considered to be risky.

Shortly after the state of emergency was announced, a group of anti-government protesters led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) stormed into the Interior Ministry compounds where Mr. Abhisit made the announcement.

Gunshots were heard as soldiers manning the area fired warning shots into the air, while UDD protesters looked for Mr. Abhisit. However, the prime minister later managed to escape from the ministry by car.

UDD protesters who are supporters of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra have been demonstrating noisily at Government House since March 26 demanding Mr. Abhisit resign from his post without condition, the House of Representatives be dissolved and a fresh election be organised.
