Ex-Neighbours star axed from UK soap
Former Neighbours star Anne Charleston has had her role in one of Britain's most
popular TV soaps axed.
Charleston, who played Madge Mitchell in Neighbours, has been told by commercial
station ITV that her character in Emmerdale, Lily Butterfield, will be written out
of the series within months.
The 66-year-old, who has starred in the British soap since 2006, told The Sun
newspaper on Thursday that the time was right to move on.
"I've a couple of projects in the pipeline that I am now looking forward to
enormously," she said.
An Emmerdale source said Charleston was determined that her exit from the show "be
as exciting as possible".
Charleston joined Emmerdale in 2006, five years after she left Neighbours.
The Melbourne-born actress had starred in the long-running Australian soap since
1986, playing mother to Kylie Minogue's character Charlene Mitchell.
She began a four-year break from Neighbours in 1992 when she emigrated to the
Republic of Ireland.
However she returned for another five years in 1996 before finally quitting in 2001
to move back to the UK where she worked on several TV shows.
