MILLI MAJLIS SPEAKER MEETS EU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR SOUTH CAUCASUS

Baku, April 7 (AzerTAc). Speaker of Azerbaijan Milli Majlis (Parliament) Ogtay Asadov met Tuesday with EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby.
Asadov praised the level of cooperation between Azerbaijan and EU.
According to him, opening of the Organization`s office in Baku and establishment of EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee will contribute to bilateral ties even more.
The Speaker noted that Milli Majlis supports EU`s Eastern Partnership initiative.
“We believe that the project will give an impetus to development of the whole region and resolution of existing problems,” Asadov added.
On the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Speaker said the fact that Armenia does not honor documents adopted by international organizations on the conflict`s settlement aggravates the situation. “Such kind of conflicts are source of danger to not only the region, but also the entire Europe. So, the European Union should increase efforts to achieve fair resolution of the conflict,” Asadov noted.
Semneby, in turn, said his current visit aims to discuss prospects for relationship between Azerbaijan and EU, settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Nabucco project and other issues.
The diplomat pointed out that Eastern partnership initiative will play an important role in expansion of ties between EU and its partners, energy security, as well as settlement of conflicts.
He noted EU highly values the fact that Milli Majlis backs the initiative.
The sides also discussed other issues of mutual interest.
