Hi-tech products still selling well
Hanoi (VNA) - Despite concerns earlier this year that consumption of luxury products would sharply decline in the economic downturn, industry insiders have said consumer demand for hi-tech luxury products has remained robust.
Representative from the electronics retailer Pico Plaza , Ngo Thanh Dat, said
the firm's sales turnover has surged after Tet (Lunar New Year), especially during
the weekends when turnover is three times higher than weekdays.
In March alone, turnover from Pico's two plazas reached 3 billion VND (171,000 USD)
some weekends, with sales mainly coming from mobile phones, digital cameras and
electronic products.
Dat said the best-selling products are reasonably priced. For example, customers
often selected digital cameras priced from 1.5 -3 million VND, laptops under 10
million VND and cell phones from 500,000 VND to 2 million VND.
Owner of the Bach Phuong laptop chain, Nguyen Van Phong, said that his shops'
turnover has also surged sharply after Tet.
Phong said his three shops sell roughly 550 laptops every month, two thirds of which
are HP, Lenovo, Dell and Asus computers under 15 million VND (882 USD).
Traders said most customers at hi-tech shops were under 35 years old.
Phong said the number of young customers visiting his shops has risen 20 percent
since last year. The number of older customers, meanwhile, has shrunk.
Representative from Vien Thong A Company, one of the country's largest mobile phone
retailers, Ngo Quang Vu, said his company's sales have remained good, adding that he
expects a growth rate of 15-20 percent this year, mainly in low-cost products.
According to a forecast from the GfK market research company, Vietnam 's
electronic and mechanical appliance market this year will increase 19 percent,
reaching roughly 4.6 billion USD.
The report said the mobile phone sector would surge 16 percent while hi-tech and
digital products are expected to increase by 24 and 29 percent, respectively.
Last year, the mobile phone and hi-tech sector rose 13 and 29 percent, respectively,
fetching a turnover of more than 1 billion USD each. Digital products meanwhile,
also earned a turnover of 86 million USD last year with a growth rate of 37
percent.-Enditem
