Red Shirts rally at Ministry of Finance

BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - Thailand's red-clad anti-government protesters Thursday afternoon marched from Government House to the Ministry of Finance and lambasted the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for allegedly inappropriate foreign borrowing as it tries to deal with Thailand’s economic challenges.

Hundreds of protesters led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) also gave moral support to Ministry of Finance officials in the current international and domestic economic battles and encouraged them to continue working to help the country to weather the economic storms.

UDD leaders took turns to pour out invective against the government's plan to borrow Bt1.65 trillion in overseas loans.

However, a number of demonstrators are still in place outside the gates of Government House to prevent police and military personnel providing security to the prime minister’s office from dispersing the rally which has continued since March 26.

The one-hour command performance at the finance ministry ended peacably and the Red Shirt contingent returned to its Government House base.

In another development, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, now attending the G20 summit in London, will cut short his participation at the meeting and will return home on Friday, a day earlier than originally scheduled.

Mr. Abhisit will leave for home from London and is scheduled to arrive in Bangkok on Friday at 3.05pm, according to Thepthai Senpong, personal spokesman for Democrat Party leader and prime minister.

Mr. Abhisit was originally due to arrive home Saturday at 6.05 am, but Mr. Thepthai said the prime minister is scheduled to accomplish his duties Thursday and has decided to return home.

He said the rescheduling of the premier's plan had nothing to do with the current political tension in the kingdom.

Natthawut Saikuea, a UDD leader, said the protesters would launch a major rally on April 8 in an attempt to oust the three-month-old coalition government of Mr. Abhisit.- (TNA)
