A month after mutiny, BDR personnel visit India for talks
New Delhi, Mar 31 (PTI) Border Security Force (BSF) and
Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Tuesday held their first round of
annual talks here after the savage mutiny at the headquarters
of the neighbouring country's paramilitary force in Dhaka
which led to the killing of its chief Major General Shakeel
Ahmed.
The Bangladesh side was led by Brigadier General Mainul
Islam and the Indian delegation was headed by BSF Director
General M L Kumawat at the meeting held after a month of the
savage mutiny by BDR personnel.
The talks, described as continuation of the earlier round
held in Dhaka, revolved around joint patrolling of 46
difficult areas, preventing cross-border terrorist movement
and trafficking of women, children and contraband, official
sources said.
Among other issues discussed between the two sides
include joint management of border pillars, fencing within 150
metres of the International border and smuggling.
The Indian side also raised the issue of terrorist camps
especially those from the country's Northeast and which
operate within the territory of Bangladesh and harbouring of
some of the wanted criminals.
The six-member Bangla delegation led by Islam will return
tomorrow after their three-day visit here. The minutes of the
meeting would be signed tomorrow morning.
Bangladesh had earlier said a process was underway for a
total reorganisation of the BDR force under a new name and
uniform to overcome the stigma it earned after the savage
February 25 and 26 rebellion in which 58 army officers serving
in the paramilitary force were killed.
Islam has earlier said the visit to India will be mainly
for thanking BSF for its cooperation during the mutiny.
BDR had said despite the debacle, the Bangladeshi border
guards were patrolling the frontline while they held routine
flag meetings with their BSF counterparts in the zero lines.
"The mutiny has not only caused the murder of many
talented officers but has also shattered people's trust in the
BDR", Islam had said in Dhaka. PTI SKL
