Performances of most Thai businesses slip in 2008
BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) - The business performances of retail outlets, hotels and restaurants, the leasing of personal effects and sports in Thailand dropped nationwide in 2008, according to Thananut Trithipphayabut, secretary-general of the National Statistical Office (NSO).
Thailand’s statistical director said surveys were conducted on 4,441 businesses and it was found that earnings during the first quarter of 2008 rose 6.2 per cent from the last quarter of 2007.
But after that they fell steadily and by the fourth quarter of 2008 earnings dropped to only 2.8 per cent, Mrs. Thananut said. Each business saw its earnings rise not more than 13 per cent from quarter to quarter last year.
Of all the businesses surveyed, sales of retail business dropped continuously since the first quarter of 2008 and are expected to continue until the first quarter of this year due to high operational costs plus political problem in Thailand and global economic slump.
She said that business operators also wanted the government to help by lowering the value-added tax or interest rates, boosting the tourism industry, assisting with loans and promoting small- and medium-sized enterprises marketing campaigns. -(TNA)
