Liver transplant surgery from donor with different blood type conducted for the first time

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On April 26, the liver transplant team of the State Central First Hospital conducted liver transplant surgery from a donor with different blood type. The surgeons reported about the surgery yesterday, May 6.
The surgery was made to 54-year old woman, transplanting liver from her daughter. The patient was diagnosed with hepatitis B and D virus-related cirrhosis and liver cancer. After the surgery, she is now recovering. If the patient cares her body very well, she can live for 15-20 years, said D.Chuluunbaatar, Acting Director General of the hospital and member of the liver transplant team.
“To secure liver transplant surgery from a donor with different blood type, our surgical team collaborated with Asan Medical Center of the Republic of Korea. Our surgeons gained full confidence to perform this kind of operation independently in the future. Although the surgical technique is the same, surgery from a donor with different blood type requires special treatment before and after the surgery. We are thankful for that cost of liver transplant surgeries are now fully funded from the state budget. But, I want the cost of the liver transplant surgeries from a donor with different blood type, are to be funded from the state budget too,” head of the national liver transplant team, Meritorious Doctor of Mongolia and world’s top surgeon O.Sergelen said.
The liver transplant team of the hospital conducted its first liver transplant surgery in 2011 in collaboration with Asan Medical Center of the Republic of Korea. Since that time, Mongolian surgeons have successfully performed this kind of surgery to 75 patients.
