FRANCE SEES TRADE IMPROVEMENT WITH MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia deserves to be better known in
France and should be able to attract more French businessmen to invest here,
French ambassador to Malaysia, Marc Barety, said Monday.

"Some might think the present global crisis does not provide an appropriate
context to develop business with Malaysia but I think exactly the opposite," he
said at the opening ceromony of the France-Asia Trade Forum here.

Barety said Malaysia deserved the French business community's attention as
it was facing the current global economic crisis with courage, intelligence and
professionalism through the adoption of two economic stimulus packages.

He said the stimulus packages were aimed at supporting companies by giving
them access to loans and stimulating the local demand.

Malaysia has also gained from the experience of facing the Asian financial
crisis in 1997 by developing a robust banking system, Barety said.

"The saving rate in Malaysia is very high and currency reserves are both
diversified and kept at a satisfactory level," he said.

"Malaysia is well equipped to get through the crisis and might recover
quicker than others," he added.

On the leadership changes in the Malaysian government, Barety said economic
decision-making was not easy but Malaysia has many assets.

"Malaysia enjoys strong political stability, and if political life has
become more active since last year, it is still within the strict framework of
the constitution," he said.

According to Barety, the Malaysian business environment is open and
flexible, and the country also has excellent infrastructure, low-cost and
qualified manpower, and an efficient and well-regulated banking system.

"Last but not least, it is one of the most developed countries in the
region," he said.

Barety said about 180 French companies were currently operating in Malaysia
with a total investment of 250 million euros (US$329.5 million)and French assets
of around seven billion euros (US$98.84 billion).

The trade value of exports and imports between Malaysia and France reached
RM6.3 billion (US$1.7 billion)and RM7.553 billion (US$2 billion) respectively
last year.
