Police monitor bikies convoy to Canberra
NSW Police have been monitoring a large convoy of Rebels bikie gang members
travelling from Sydney to Canberra for the funeral of a colleague murdered last
week.
The convoy of 150 motorcycles and 30 other vehicles is on its way to Canberra for
the weekend, for an annual tattoo show and the funeral of Richard Roberts on Monday.
Roberts and fellow Rebel Gregory Carrigan were shot dead in the Canberra suburb of
Chisholm on Tuesday afternoon - adding to tensions created by Sydney's bikie war.
Sydney's bikie gangs have hit the headlines in recent weeks, with a string of
drive-by shootings and a fatal brawl at Sydney Airport attracting the ire of police
and politicians.
Police on Friday officially launched Strike Force Raptor to eliminate bikie warfare
and related criminal activity - a direct response to the airport brawl that killed
Hells Angels associate Anthony Zervas.
Zervas was laid to rest at a funeral in Sydney on Friday.
A police spokesman said police were keeping an eye on the Rebels convoy as it made
its way to Canberra.
So far, the convoy had been incident free, he said.
"Police from the southern region as well as traffic services, public order riot
squad and police from Strike Force Raptor have deployed significant resources over
the weekend on main arterial roads leading in and out of the Queanbeyan and ACT
areas to coincide with tattoo show there, and the funeral of the Rebel member who
was killed in the ACT last week," the spokesman said.
