Vietnam supports mediation efforts in Darfur conflict

New York (VNA) - Viet Nam has affirmed supports of ongoing mediation efforts made by the UN-AU Joint Chief Mediator, Djibril Bassole, and by Qatar on behalf of the Arab League in promoting the Darfur peace process.

At a meeting of the UN Security Council on the Darfur mediation process in New
York on March 26, Vietnamese Representative to the UN, Ambassador Le Luong Minh
noted the initial encouraging outcome of those mediation efforts, including the
conclusion of the Doha Agreement between the Sudanese Government and the JEM last
February.

Ambassador Minh praised the 15 March decision by five minor rebel factions in
Darfur to join the Doha peace agreement. He called on all other rebel groups
to follow suit, thus promoting the momentum of cooperation and national
reconciliation in order to resume and reinvigorate the Darfur peace and
political process.

He highly appreciated the logistical assistance extended by the UN-African Union
Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) to the Joint Chief Mediator in discharging his duties.

The Vietnamese representative expressed hopes that all the partners in the Darfur
mediation process will enhance their coordination in order to achieve maximum
synergy, thereby expediting the search for a comprehensive and lasting solution to
the Darfur conflict.-Enditem
