AHMAD ZAHID, HISHAMMUDDIN, SHAFIE WIN UMNO VEEP POSTS




KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) -- Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishammuddin Tun
Hussein and Mohd Shafie Apdal were elected as United Malays National
Organization (Umno) vice-presidents at the Umno general assembly 2008 Thursday.

UMNO is a right-wing party and Malaysia's largest political party; a
founding member of the National Front (Barisan Nasional -BN) coalition, which
has been Malaysia's ruling political party since independence.

Ahmad Zahid received the highest votes of 1,592 while Hishammuddin, who was
the former Umno Youth head, polled 1,515 votes and Mohd Shafie garnered 1,445
votes.

Others who contested for the three vice-presidency slots and lost were Dr
Rais Yatim, Isa Abdul Samad, Syed Hamid Albar, Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Abdul
Rahim Tamby Chik.

The results of the poll were announced by Umno permanent chairman Onn Ismail
at about 10.45 pm at the Putra World Trade Cenetre, here.
