Interests of opposition from Syrian Negotiations Commission to be considered in Syria’s Constitutional Committee - Lavrov

KUWAIT CITY, March 6. /TASS/. The oppositional Syrian Negotiations Commission (SNC) took part in the development of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and its interests will be taken into account, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a joint press conference with Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah. "The conversation with Nasr al-Hariri, who heads the SNC, was rather constructive. We called on our interlocutors to act in accordance with UNSC Resolution 2254, which determines the dialogue between the Syrians themselves as the major area of the Syrian settlement," the minister noted. "The Constitutional Committee, which is soon to be established, already includes 50 representative for the government and 50 opposition representatives. Our interlocutors also took direct part in the development of the oppositional part, so their interests will be duly represented." The Russian foreign minister stressed that "it is necessary to end the creation of the Constitutional Committee as soon as possible, ceasing a search for pretexts for artificially dragging out this work." Lavrov held a meeting with the SNC head in Riyadh. It was reported after the meeting that the Russian minister invited al-Hariri to visit Russia for consultations. The sides also discussed the humanitarian situation in Syria with focus on the events in the Rukban refugee camp. The decision to establish the Constitutional Committee was made at the Congress of the Syrian National Dialogue in Sochi on January 30, 2018.
