KHAIRY JAMALUDDIN ELECTED NEW UMNO YOUTH CHIEF

KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 (Bernama) -- Khairy Jamaluddin was elected the new
United Malays National Organisation (Umno) Youth head when he received 304 votes
to beat two other contenders, Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo and Mukhriz Dr Mahathir to
succeed Hishammuddin Hussein.

Khairy, 33, who is also the son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi, was previously the movement's vice-head.

Khairy, who graduated from St Hugh College, University of Oxford, began his
career in government as the speech writer to Abdullah who was then the Deputy
Prime Minister in 1999.

Khairy was then appointed deputy private secretary to Abdullah as Prime
Minister in 2003.

He also has a masters degree in legal theory and politics from University
College, London, and was a writer for "The Economist" in 1999.

In the political arena, Khairy joined Umno shortly after returning from
abroad in 1998.

Khairy became Umno executive committee member and headed the current affairs
unit in 2001 before he won the vice-chief post uncontested in July 2004.

In the 2008 general election, Khairy beat Badrul Hisham Shaharin of People's
Justice Party (PKR) in the southern Rembau parliamentary constituency by a
5,746-vote majority.

On March 17, 2009, Khairy was let of by the Umno Disciplinary Board with a
warning when he was found guilty for breaching party ethics on money politics.
Umno is the dominant party in Malaysia's ruling National Front.
