SUCCESS OF A COALITION GOVERNMENT DEPENDS ON SINCERITY
By Mohd Razman Abdullah
KUALA KRAI (Malaysia), March 25 (Bernama) -- Whether or not the idea of a coalition government between opposition parties and National Front (Barisan Nasional-BN), as mooted by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, will materialise depends on the sincerity of leaders from both sides, Umno veteran Hussein Ahmad said.
The United Malays National Organisation, or UMNO is a right-wing party and
Malaysia's largest political party; a founding member of the National Front
(Barisan Nasional -BN) coalition, which has been Malaysia's ruling political
party since independence.
While PAS or the Islamic Party of Malaysia is an Islamist opposition
political party in Malaysia, and together with People's Justice Party (Parti
KeADILan Rakyat -PKR), a Democratic Action Party (DAP) formed part of a
coalition called People's Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat) following the Malaysia's
2008 election.
"If the intention is good, it (outcome) will be good. If it's not, it will
not be good. If Umno wants to make PAS a tool, (and) if PAS wants to take
advantage of Umno, both are wrong," he told Bernama.
Hussein said the proposed idea was not impossible to be implemented,
considering that Umno and PAS had forged such a cooperation in 1973.
Three decades since, the idea of Umno-PAS cooperation had resurfaced and
several months back Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi suggested a
muzakarah (discussion) between PAS and Umno on the fate of the Malays and Islam.
However, at the PAS general assembly in August last year, the party closed
its doors to such a discussion through a resolution which objected any
collaboration with Umno.
Now, PAS is singing a different tune when party leader Hadi came out with
such a suggestion.
However, its spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat opposed Hadi's
suggestion, seeing it as going against the party's decision and as allowing Umno
to make use of PAS to regain the support of the Malays as had happened in 1973.
Kelantan Umno Youth regards the difference in opinion between Hadi
and Nik Aziz as a political gimmick.
"Actually, PAS is having a problem of internal bickering," Gua Musang Umno
Youth leader Bazlan Baharuddin said.
He disputed Nik Aziz's thinking that Umno would manipulate PAS because the
suggestion for a coalition government came from Hadi and not from Umno.
Another theory which has surfaced since Hadi mooted the idea, is that should
it becomes a reality, many PAS leaders will stand to gain from it where they
will be getting higher posts in politics.
As such, there is concern in PAS over jostling for posts among party
leaders.
"Which ever side, PAS or Umno, they are the same. In politics, we cannot run
away from jostling for posts because this is normal," said Hussein.
"The fact remains that discussions on setting up the proposed coalition
government can only materialise if there is honesty and sincerity from both
sides," he added.
