CHOOSE LEADERS RESPECTED BY EVERYONE - M'SIAN PM
KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- Abdyllah Ahmad Badawi wants
the United Malays National Organization (Umno) delegates to ensure that the leaders chosen at the Umno general assembly are not only respected by party members but also the people in general.
As such, the Umno president said every delegate must be serious in
discharging their responsibilities because the line-up chosen would determine
the future of Umno and at the same time implement the main agenda of the country
in the years to come.
"Everyone (delegates) must understand that the task of voting (the party
leadership line-up) is most crucial. As such, a serious attitude must be
maintained when casting the ballot papers...the attitude of placing priority on
what is good for the party.
"The attitude to ensure that the leadership line-up chosen is respected and
gets the confidence of the party and the people in discharging whatever
responsibilities entrusted upon them. It is most important to understand this,"
he said.
He said this to reporters after delivering his message to the 2,500
delegates who would be attending the Umno General Assembly 2008 at the Putra
World Trade Centre (PWTC), here Tuesday.
Also present at the media conference were Umno deputy president
Najib Tun Razak and Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku
Mansor.
The election for the leadership line-up for the Wanita, Youth and Puteri
Umno movements will be held Wednesday while the election for the Umno Supreme
Council (MT) will be held on Thursday.
Abdullah also said the elected leaders were not only liked by the party
members because the leadership line-up had a significant role to play as the
country leaders too.
"As such, public confidence is also most important and with the choice made,
insya-Allah (God willing) we can continue Umno's struggles and the national
agenda in the best manner possible.
"...(this) especially pertaining to economic recovery, efforts to strengthen
the economy besides ensuring that Malaysians remain united, strong and continue
to be with us in the struggles for a better future for the party," he said.
Abdullah also explained that his message this time was the shortest since he
became Umno president because he wanted every delegate to focus on the election
of a leadership line-up that was truly capable.
"Less than 30 minutes. That's because I don't want them to think of other
things but to discharge the responsibility entrusted upon them by members in
their respective divisions," he said.
At the same time, Abdullah reminded party members to eliminate conflicts
between themselves as this would have a negative effect on Umno.
He said the election process should not lead to quarrels, conflicts and
undesired developments which would eventually be detrimental to everyone.
When asked whether the power transition between him and Najib was also
touched in his message, the Prime Minister said it was not.
"I did not touch on the power transition because all the delegates already
knew and understood it," Abdullah said.
On the attempt by Umno members recently to obstruct the party from holding
its general assembly, he said the attempt would not succeed.
"It is impossible, (it) never happens," he said, adding that Najib would
lead Umno after his position as party president was endorsed by the delegates
soon.
Abdullah also hoped the the party election process would proceed peacefully
without any hindrance.
Asked whether he was sad when delivering his last message as Umno president,
the Prime Minister said he never thought about it. In fact, he added, he was
very happy.
"I forgot about that, I was just happy as I was. I have been speaking to
them, that is not a problem, I am very happy when Umno is doing well. I am not
the sentimental type.
"If they cry, I also cry," he quipped.
UMNO is a right-wing party and Malaysia's largest political party; a
founding member of the National Front (Barisan Nasional -BN) coalition, which
has been Malaysia's ruling political party since independence.
