Hitachi-GE JV to Provide Nuclear Tech to India

Tokyo, March 24 (Jiji Press)--Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy Ltd., a joint venture between Japan's Hitachi Ltd. <6501> and General Electric Co. of the United States, said Tuesday that it has reached basic agreements to provide its nuclear power technology to two state-run Indian companies.

It will be the first time for a U.S.-affiliated company to provide
nuclear technology to India since a civilian nuclear cooperation pact
between the United States and India took effect last October.
The two Indian companies are Nuclear Power Corp. of India, which
operates nuclear power plants in the South Asian country, and Bharat Heavy
Electricals Ltd.
Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy will provide its technology to help them
build advanced boiling water reactors.
The Indian government aims to expand the country's nuclear power
generation capacity from the current 4.1 million kilowatts to 60 million
kilowatts by 2032.
