Rise in use of internet in Yemen
SANA'A, March 21 (Saba) – The number of Yemeni people internet users
increased during the last year to 295.215 users compared with
216.077 in the previous year.
A report, which was issued by the public authority for wireless
communication, also noted the subscribers to the internet service of
Dial Up rose to 270.773, up from 205.613 in 2007.
The report said that the subscribers to the Super Yemen Net (ADSL)
jumped to 24.442 compared to only 10.464 in 2007.
The internet cafés across the republic rose from 925 in 2007 to 973
shops in 2008.
People in Yemen started first to use the internet in 1996 with the
companies of Yemen Net an Teleyemen being the providers of the
service.
Under a 2008 plan, the General Corporation for Wire and Wireless
Communication was aiming to expand and develop the internet service
through improving the functioning of the current network and
protecting it as well as solving congestion problems.
And now, the corporation aims to expand and modernize the instant
messaging service through adopting the IP/MPLS technologies that
allow using multi protocols to technically serve the so-called
coming generation NGN.
Last month, the corporation signed with the Chinese Huawei Company
an $ 8 million deal to update the service.

corporation seeks to double its capacity and is preparing to enter a
new element of modern communication technology.
