Thai auto production, sales down in first two months of 2009

BANGKOK, March 18 (TNA) - The current economic sluggishness in Thailand has sharply impacted automobile production and sales during the first two months of 2009, according to Wallop Tiasiri, director of Thailand’s Automotive Institute.

Motor vehicle production in Thailand during January-February 2009 tumbled 40 per cent to 130,000 units, down 40 per cent from earlier projections, according to Mr. Wallop.

40,000 units were sold within Thailand while the remaining 90,000 units were for export, he said.

Domestic sales and exports during the period tumbled 30 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, he said.

Despite the sharp declines, Mr. Wallop said he is optimistic that domestic sales will pick up in March and April as intending buyers awaiting possible government reductions in excise taxes for automobiles.

Auto producers meanwhile are jointly organising a motor show to begin later this month extending to early April, which could stimulate buying.

Auto sales in Thailand in 2009 are expected to drop to approximately 950,000 units compared to 1.4 million units in 2008, he said. Domestic sales are projected at about 450,000 units while the remaining 500,000 units are for export. (TNA)
