SUGAR LEVEL WARNING TAGLINE BEING STUDIED

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry may consider proposals from the Penang Consumers Association (CAP) on ways to create awareness on diabetes.

Its minister, Shahrir Abdul Samad said he would discus with relevant
agencies including the Information Ministry on the proposals.

CAP has proposed to the government to impose a sugar level warning tagline
on products and banning drink and junk food commercials during children's
programmes, he told reporters after launching the Danger of Sugar on Health
campaign organised by CAP here Tuesday.

CAP secretary Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said an integrated campaign must be
carried out to warn the people on the danger of taking excessive sugar in an
effort to reduce the number of diabetic patients in the country.

On the proposed sugar warning tagline, he said it could be expanded to
include the content of saturated fat, unsaturated fat and salt.

Colour coding could be used for the tagline, that is red for high sugar
content, amber (medium) and green (low), he added.
