ORGANIZERS OF INTERNATIONAL MUGHAM FESTIVAL HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE

Baku, 17 March (AzerTAc). Azerbaijan Historical Museum hosted here today a press conference dealing with the International festival “The World of Mugham” to be held in the capital of Azerbaijan on March 18-25 at the initiative of UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva.

Participating President of the National Academy of Sciences Mahmud Karimov, Minister of Education Misir Mardanov, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Sevda Mammadaliyeva, Chairwoman of Composers` Union Firangiz Alizadeh and Director of the Museum Naila Valikhanly provided journalists with detailed information on the ongoing preparatory work.

Specifically, they announced that an international scientific symposium, international mugham contest and a series of concerts will be held during the festival, which is to be joined by nearly 100 guests, including 30 scholars on Mugham from several countries.

The speakers described the festival as an important step towards raising awareness of the international community about Azerbaijan`s traditional music and further promoting of Azerbaijani culture.

The mugham contest, which will bring together 67 singers from Turkey, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Germany, will take place on 22-24 March in the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre in Baku. Azerbaijan will be represented by five mugham performers: Tayyar Bayramov, Vafa Orujova, Babek Niftaliyev, Arzu Aliyeva and Sabuhi Ibayev.

Sponsors of the festival are the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Education and the Foundation of Friends of Azerbaijani Culture.

Grand Prix winner`s award will be 20,000 Euro, while those claiming first three places will receive 15,000, 10,000 and 5,000 Euro respectively.

The festival will be officially opened on 20 March at the International Mugham Center and solemnly closed on 25 March in Heydar Aliyev Palace in Baku.

The event will also be attended by Director-General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura.
