Thai authorities nab 113 Myanmar nationals
BANGKOK, March 17 (TNA) - Thai immigration police on Tuesday apprehended 113 Myanmar nationals and charged them with entering and working in the country illegally, apparently in a variety of ‘pyramid scheme’.
Immigration police said the workers were found on the premises of Digital Crown Holdings Co. on South Sathorn Road, near Immigration Police headquarters. The company recruits sales representatives after being paid a joining fee, which allows its agents to direct sell of cosmetics and perfume.
The Myanmar workers told immigration police that they were sold the company’s products and built customer networks.
One arrested Myanmar worker, identified only as Mr. Tone, told immigration police that he joined the company last week after paying a membership fee of Bt20,000 (US$564). He was promised a commission of Bt3,000 (US$84) per sales agent he recruited and would receive 15 per cent of the total sales of any member he recruited.
Most of the buyers of cosmetic products are from Myanmar, Mr. Tone said.
Seventy-six workers were charged with illegal entry and working without a permit, 24 were charged with engaging in professions not allowed by their work permits, and the remaining 13 were charged with working without permits, immigration police said. (TNA)
