Austrian incest dad's wife 'didn't know'
The wife of Josef Fritzl, who locked his daughter in a dungeon in Austria for 24
years, says he has ruined her life.
Rosemarie Fritzl, 69, has spoken publicly for the first time since her husband was
arrested last year after police discovered he had imprisoned his daughter Elisabeth
in a cellar at his family's home and fathered seven children with her.
Rosemarie revealed she had changed her name and moved to a new town to try to escape
the shame her 73-year-old husband had brought on her family.
"I don't know where I'm heading now," she told The Sun newspaper in Britain on Monday.
"My life has already been ruined enough. I don't have any money.
"My pride is all I have left, that and my family. All I want is to keep my family."
Rosemarie, who claimed she never had any idea about how her husband kept Elisabeth
and three of the children she had with her father in the cellar, said she rarely
leaves her new flat and has her groceries delivered.
"People have said so many things about me, but I can't speak," she said.
"I just want to be left alone."
Her comments came as her husband's trial started in Austria.
Josef Fritzl held a blue folder over his face as he was escorted into the courthouse
in St Poelten, west of Vienna.
He is on trial for murder, rape, incest, coercion, false imprisonment and enslavement.
Police say 73-year-old Fritzl confessed to holding his daughter in a cell he built
beneath his home.
Investigators say DNA tests show he fathered her six surviving children.
One of the children died in infancy, and prosecutors charged Fritzl with murder,
contending the baby might have survived if Fritzl had arranged for medical care.
Fritzl faces up to life imprisonment. A verdict is expected by Friday.
