Ex Thai PM, deputy, police officers could face charges in Oct 7 clash
BANGKOK, March 16 (TNA) - Investigators resolved on Monday that there were grounds to file charges against former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat and his then deputy premier Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, national police chief Pol. Gen. Patcharawat and four senior police officers, for their part in the October 7 clashes in Bangkok, according to a member of the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).
Two people were killed and nearly 500 people injured after police fired teargas into the demonstrators near parliament building and at Metropolitan Police bureau headquarters.
Klanarong Chantik said the NCCC investigators found Mr. Somchai, brother-in-law of fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and then deputy prime minister Gen. Chavalit had violated the criminal law when they ordered police to disperse the demonstrators.
The NCCC conducted an investigation following complaints lodged with his agency regarding the October 7 protest, organised by the People’s Alliance for Democracy against the then government of Mr. Somchai.
Mr. Klanarong said five ranking police officers, including national police chief Pol. Gen. Patcharawat Wongsuwan, could also face criminal and disciplinary charges.
Charges against Deputy Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol. Maj. Gen. Amnuay Nimmano had been suspended pending further evidence of his direct involvement, said Mr. Klanarong. -(TNA)
