NAJIB MUST ENSURE HIS CABINET LINE-UP FREE FROM CORRUPTION - DR M
KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 (Bernama) -- Dr Mahathir Mohamad Saturday advised Najib Razak to ensure that the cabinet members he appoints when be becomes prime minister are free from any form of corruption.
The former prime minister said the people were now watching closely the
country's political scenario, especially the run-up to the United Malays
National Organization (UMNO) elections at the end of this month.
"The people do know who are involved in corruption because they have been
giving money quite openly, and those who received the money have been telling
that they received the money to win their support.
"If Najib becomes PM and he chooses these people, then I say he is signing
his own death warrant because he will lose the next general election," he said
at a discourse on "Democracy and Malaysia's Future Leadership" organised by the
Federal Territory Former Elected Representatives Council (Mubarak), here,
Saturday.
Dr Mahathir said the planned power transition had been taking place with
adherence to the party's constitution.
"However, what we are worried about is, there is a lot of money politics
involved and even if there is transition, if the leaders chosen are corrupt,
Umno will not gain the support of the people."
He said using bribery to win votes could damage the country's democratic
system, hence party delegates must be wise by voting in only clean leaders with
good leadership qualities.
"It's better for us to dissolve the party than to install corrupt people to
lead the party," he added.
Dr Mahathir said the support of those outside Umno was also important to
ensure victory for National Front or Barisan Nasional (BN) and "this group is
watching closely the actions of Umno leaders in the run-up to the party
elections scheduled for this March 24 to 28".
On the RM60 billion second economic stimulus package announced recently, he
said that what was important was how the allocations would be utilised.
"Well, if you look at America for example, they have been adding and adding
their stimulus package and still they see no results. So, this maybe the
beginning of our stimulus package because we do not know how far it will go.
"But how it will be used is very important. They must be very
careful with the allocation of funds from the stimulus package...this needs a
proper study. You must know all the details regarding the performing economy,"
he said.
On the suggestion by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang on forming a
coalition government with Umno, Dr Mahathir said this had happened before but it
eventually failed due to the two parties' differing principles and struggles.
"Whatever it is, BN has ruled Malaysia for 50 years and has brought
prosperity and progress to the people of this country," he said.
The United Malays National Organisation, or UMNO is a right-wing party and
Malaysia's largest political party; a founding member of the National Front
(Barisan Nasional) coalition, which has been Malaysia's ruling political party
since independence.
