Opposition files censure motions against PM, five ministers
BANGKOK, March 12 (TNA) - The opposition Puea Thai Party on Thursday filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and five of his Cabinet ministers, according to Chalerm Ubumrung, chief of the Puea Thai members of parliament.
The five ministers to be grilled by the Opposition party during the no-confidence debate are Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij, Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya, Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul, Deputy Finance Minister Pradit Phataraprasit and Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wongtrairat, Mr. Chalerm told a press conference.
The censure debate will be its first since the coalition government, formed by the ruling Democrat party, came to power December 22.
The motions to impeach the five ministers were submitted to Senate Speaker Prasobsuk Boondej.
On Wednesday, Puea Thai Party filed a motion with the Senate Speaker to impeach Mr. Abhisit, accusing him of violating the Constitution and abusing his power. Among the reasons provided include allegations that his rise to power was undemocratic as it was allegedly helped by "elite groups", and the appointment of Kasit Piromya as foreign minister despite his having regularly joined protests by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD).
The Oxford-graduate Democrat Party leader was elected prime minister in a vote by Parliament in December following the Constitution Court ruling December 2 dissolving the three parties of the previous coalition government led by allies of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Originally the Puea Thai Party excluded Interior Minister Chavarat from its censure bid for his role in the abrupt reshuffling of 28 senior ministry officials, mostly provincial governors and two directors-general, on an order issued on Tuesday.
However, the Opposition changed its mind Thursday afternoon, Mr. Chalerm said, and the interior minister’s name has been included as the party has received new information about his alleged wrongdoings.
Asked whether the Puea Thai Party will punish MPs who vote in favour of the six men after the debate, Mr. Chalerm said no punishment would be imposed because his party sees it as normal that some could betray their companions and join the government side. (TNA)
