Stewart's lawyer 'not aware of DNA test'
The lawyer for rugby league star Brett Stewart says he has not been informed of any
DNA test results, amid reports they do not support the sexual assault charge against
the Manly player.
The 24-year-old fullback was arrested and released last Friday following allegations
a 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted after the club's season launch party
outside a North Manly unit block.
He was charged with sexual assault on Tuesday.
On Thursday, The Daily Telegraph reported all major DNA samples taken in connection
with the allegation had been tested and returned no evidence to support the charge
against Stewart.
Police would not comment on the matter, and Stewart's lawyer Geoff Bellew told AAP
he was not aware of the results.
"I have received no notification from the police of any DNA result," he said.
"I would not expect to receive such notification until such time as the brief of
evidence is served, contained in which I would expect there to be a DNA report.
"I do not expect to receive the brief of evidence until some time after the matter
has come before the court on April 7."
Before the charge was laid, Stewart was to be the face of the NRL season, but he has
since been suspended for four matches.
The governing body also fined Manly $100,000 for the boozy season launch last Friday
that preceded the alleged incident involving Stewart.
