Ornamental fish approved for UD export

HCM City (VNA/VNS) - The Department of Animal Health on Mar.6 recognised three ornamental fish businesses in Ho Chi Minh City as meeting conditions to export carp to the US .

Their fish are safe from the Spring Viraemia of Carp (SVC) an infections viral
desease of carp (Cyprinus carpio) and other cyprinus carpio) and other cyprinid
fish species, according to the department.

The Vo Van Sanh Ornamental Fish Farm in district 9, Chau Tong Ornamental Fish Farm
in district 12, and Sai Gon Ornamental Fish Company in Cu Chi district are the
enterprises that have received the go-ahead for exports to the US .

Pham Lam Chinh van, deputy head of the city's sub-department of Gishery Resources
Protection, said the three businesses would be models for 300 other ornamental
fish breeders in the city to learn about exporting ornamental fish to the US ,
particularly carp and goldfish.

Since September 2006, the US Department of Agriculture has required SVC testing on
many ornamental fish species including carp and goldfish.

However, laboratories in the city did not have the capacity then to conduct tests
for this virus. Therefore, carp and goldfish breeders were stuck, unable to export
to the US .

In August 2007, the city Fishery Resources Protection decided to carry out a
programme to breed ornamental fish that are not infected with the SVC virus.

"The sub-department worked with the Research Institute for Aquaculture No 2 to
provide training courses in breeding SVC-free ornamental fish for breeders," Lam
said.

Tong Huu Chau, owner of the Chau Tong Ornamental Fish Farm, said 30 fish breeders
in the city participated in the programme but only three were selected to export
their fish to the US because of the strict regulations.

"Ornamental fish breeders that participated in the programme have to destroy their
breeder fish if it is discovered that they are spreading SVC," Chau said, because
breeder fish were their main asset.

Nguyen Phuoc Trung, deputy director of the city Department of Agriculture and
Rural Development said the city would continue developing the model of breeding
ornamental fish that are safe from diseases to boost export.

For 2010, the city has targeted ornamental fish exports of 50 million USD.-Enditem
