Female body found off Phuket believed to be Austrian national

PHUKET, March 10 (TNA) - Thai rescue officials on Tuesday retrieved the body of a Western woman believed to be one of 7 people missing after the sinking of a commuter boat in the Andaman Sea during a heavy storm on the weekend. The search continued for another six missing persons.

Phuket disaster prevention and mitigation office chief Chotenarin Kerdsom said the body was believed to be that of Gabrielle Jetzinger, an Austrian tourist.

A Thai navy patrol boat arrived at the floating corpse some 12 nautical miles from Phuket's Prom Thep on Tuesday morning after a Thai naval helicopter spotted the body face down in the sea Tuesday morning.

The woman’s body, believed to have drowned more than 24 hours ago, was sent to a government hospital for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, a combined force of marine police and naval personnel continued to search for at least six other missing persons, including at least five foreigners--two Swiss, one Japanese, one Austria, one German and a Thai crew member--in the hope that the missing persons might still be alive.

The incident occurred when the commuter boat ‘Choke Somboon 19', ferrying some 30 Thai and foreign passengers from the Similan Islands to Phuket’s Patong Beach, capsized Sunday night in high seas, heavy rain and strong winds. The boat owner has been asked to retrieve the sunken boat and remove an oil slick on the sea's surface estimated to be 70 metres above the sunken craft. (TNA)
