Man accused of raping Aussie in India

A 28-year-old Australian woman has allegedly been raped at a beach resort on India's
southwest coast.
Police have arrested and charged a man after the woman's husband and other foreign
nationals captured and held an intruder at the resort early on Saturday, the Times
of India reported on Monday.
In a complaint filed with police, the woman said she was sexually assaulted while
staying at the Cafe Paradise resort at Om Beach near the town of Kawar, about 520km
northwest of Bangalore.
Police sub-inspector Kiran Kumar said the woman, who was not named, reported she was
sleeping inside a beach cottage with the doors open because of the heat, while her
husband slept outside.
Early on Saturday she felt a man on top of her and realised it was a stranger, Kumar
said.
When she raised the alarm, the man ran away and her husband saw him fleeing, he said.
The husband gathered other foreign nationals from nearby cottages and they captured
the man and locked him in a room until morning when police came and took him into
custody, Kumar said.
Sharan Gouda, a 20-year-old electrical engineering student at a college in Bangalore
in Karnataka state, was arrested and remanded in custody after appearing before a
magistrate, the Times reported.
Gouda had been holidaying with friends at nearby Gokarna town, police said.
Detective Inspector Gopal Hosur said Gouda allegedly broke into the cottage where
the woman was staying and raped her.
"The accused was touring the place along with six friends. We are ascertaining
whether he was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place," Hosur
said.
