Iran, Portugal discuss ways of expanding cooperation

Tehran, March 8, IRNA -- Visiting director general for political affairs of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry conferred on Sunday with the Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi on ways of expanding ties between the two countries.

At the meeting, Nuno Brito said that he is carrying a message from his country's foreign minister on ways of expanding political, economic as well as cultural cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

As an active member of the European Union (EU) and NATO, Portugal seeks to deepen and broaden ties and cooperation with Iran, he said.

Commending the positive and constructive role of Iran in Afghanistan and Iraq, he said that the EU is quite aware of the fact that Iran shoulders a grave responsibility in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and fight against drug trafficking while hosting a large number of Afghan refugees which was a burden on the country given the huge financial and material losses.

Portugal, he said, believes that Iran has always played a constructive role in the region and welcomes the country's positive role in regional developments.

Portuguese has always backed Iran's peaceful nuclear programs and believes that the issue should be resolved through negotiations, he said.

Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi (pictured), for his part, highlighted regional developments mainly in Afghanistan and Iraq and said Iran has played a positive and active role in Afghanistan and spared no efforts to help restore tranquility in Iraq.

Increase in volume of drug trafficking and eradicating terrorism in Afghanistan were two main obstacles preventing the restoration of stability and tranquility in the region as well as in the world, he said adding that presence of US and NATO forces did not help resolve the problem.

He also strongly criticized the decision of the European Union to remove MKO from the list of terrorist and said, "We expect the EU to adopt a serious role in te fight against terrorism and avoid double-standards policies to this end."

Welcoming Portugal's proposal on the expansion of relations and cooperation with Iran, he said that based on mutual respect and interests, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to broaden and deepen cooperation with EU member states more than before./end
