Berlin, Mar 8, IRNA - The US-led international standoff over Iran's nuclear program could be resolved within the next 10-12 months, a top Russian foreign and security policy expert said.
Talking to IRNA in Berlin on Saturday, the director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, Dmitri Trenin said, "I think we have maybe 10-12 months that will be crucial for the solution of the problem."
"I think, there is a clear preference by the US administration for diplomatic and political steps for the next 10-12 months. No one will say that other things are off the table but they are, as if they are off the table," he added.
Trenin stressed chances were "better now than a number of years" to reach a diplomatic solution.
"I think the chances are good. At the same time not everything will depend on the US and other countries. A lot will depend on Iran and how it analyzes the situation. How it sees its interests and how it approaches this new US engagement initiative," he said.
Trenin urged Tehran and Washington seize upon this what he branded "window of opportunity."
"We must all be aware that we have that window of opportunity which in principle would give Iran more than it ever had hoped for from an American administration since maybe the 1980s," Trenin said.
He emphasized that the US government needed additional time to present its new Iran policy.
"Give the US administration a little more time. They cannot change everything at one time," the Russian expert added.
Trenin called on America to work closely with the international community, including Russia, to ensure that Iran could also pursue "peaceful nuclear research."
