Rice crop promises healthy earnings
Kien Giang (VNA/VNS) - Rice farmers in the Cuu Long ( Mekong ) Delta are harvesting
a bumper winter-spring crop and earning high profits as production costs fall,
prices go up and traders buy all of their commodity rice.
Nguyen Van Hai, a farmer in Kien Giang province's U Minh Thuong district, said he
has harvested one hectare of rice with an output of 6 tonnes and sold them all to
traders.
"I earned a profit of nearly 9 million VND (530 USD) after deducting all
production cost," Hai says.
Delta farmers have harvested about 500,000ha of the total of 1.54 million hectares
of the winter-spring crop so far, according to figures from the provincial
departments of agriculture and rural development.
These developments are a sharp contrast to the last summer-autumn crop that saw
farmers stuck with large quantities of low-quality rice.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development later warned farmers not to grow
low-quality rice varieties and many farmers paid heed, switching to high-quality
rice for the winter-spring crop.
"I switched to high-quality rice in the winter-spring crop and had a good harvest
while the production costs have dropped," said Nguyen Van Ba, a farmer in Co Do
district's Dong Hiep commune in Can Tho city.
"After I harvested my rice, traders bought in all at prices of between 4,300-3,500
VND a kilo," Ba adds.
Traders are now buying high-quality rice at 4,500-4,600 VND per kilo, fragrant
rice at 5,000-5,200 VND per kg and low-quality rice at 4,000-4,200 VND per kg.
These prices are 100-200 VND a kilo higher than last week.
Rice production costs stand at about 2,000 VND a kilo for the winter-spring crop,
a drop of nearly 1,000 VND a kilo compared to last winter-spring crop as the
result of reduced prices for input materials.
With the lower production costs and higher rice prices, farmers can earn profits
of 40-50 percent, agriculture officials in the delta say.
Dr Le Van Banh, director of the Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute, said
farmers are expected to harvest an average output of 6.2 tonnes per ha for the
winter-spring crop.
The delta as a whole would harvest around 9-10 million tonnes of rice in the
winter-spring crop, Banh said.-Enditem
