Fury sign Scott Wilson to two-year deal
Days after cutting ties with Scott Chipperfield, A-League newcomers North Queensland
Fury believe they have filled the huge vacancy created by the Socceroo.
The Fury could not hide their joy after snapping up Scott Wilson on a two season deal.
Wilson, 31, currently captains Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Division One and
is a former teammate of Fury coach Ian Ferguson from his days at Glasgow giants
Rangers.
"Chippers would have been brilliant but it is not to be, we have found someone to
fill his shoes," Fury chairman Don Matheson said after terminating talks with
Chipperfield.
North Queensland suddenly ended negotiations with Chipperfield on the weekend after
learning the Newcastle Jets had tried to lure the Swiss-based Socceroo by wining and
dining his wife Stefanie.
Chipperfield had reportedly told the Fury he was only interested in coming back to
Australia to play in North Queensland.
Perth Glory are also expected to be in the hunt for the 33-year-old.
Once confirming there was another club in the mix, the Fury immediately withdrew a
deal believed to be worth about $400,000 a season.
But that has opened the door for Wilson.
"I'm trying to build a team with experience and young legs and Scott was in my
thoughts right from the start," Ferguson said of the defender.
"I think he's the best in the Scottish League at the moment and he'll certainly
bring a lot to the team with the experience he's got."
Wilson was just 16 when he first crossed paths with Ferguson at Rangers in 1993.
"He was only a young boy then coming through the ranks but he played a lot of
Premier League games for them," Ferguson said.
"He's only 31 now so he's probably got three or four good seasons to play.
"Scott brings us another leader - someone who can help bring some of the younger
ones through."
Among the Fury players who began arriving in Townsville this week to inspect
facilities and real estate were Justin Pasfield, Jacob Timpano, Brendon Santalab,
Ufuk Talay and James Robinson.
But the biggest drawcard at the Fury is not expected in Townsville for another
fortnight - Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler.
"Playing against David Beckham (while at Sydney FC) was surreal but playing
alongside Robbie Fowler will be amazing," Santalab told reporters.
"I'm a striker so it will be fantastic what I'll be able to learn from him."
