Vietnam prioritises reforestation
Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam has set aside 16.2 million ha for reforestation, intending to increase total forestation to 43 percent by 2010, said a Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development official.
At a national seminar on forest preservation amid economic development in Hanoi
on March 4, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hua Duc Nhi
noted that protecting the country's forests will mitigate the adverse impacts of
climate change and help improve the environment.
He reported that the country's forests dwindled from 43 percent to 27 percent in the
1990s due to deforestation caused by development and industrialisation.
To counteract the situation, various 'green' programmes have been launched,
including the national project to plant 5 million hectares of forest which helped
the country bring the forestation ratio to 38 percent.
The seminar, which will run through March 6, is being jointly held by the Ministry
of Agriculture and Rural Development's Ranger Department, the ICRAF, CIFOR and
FSSP.-Enditem
